JEE AIR 1 Nitin Gupta transformed his career from computer science to neuroscience after returning to IIT Kanpur. Gupta secured the top rank in IIT-JEE in 2000 and studied computer science at IIT Kanpur. After completing a PhD in bioinformatics and systems biology at the University of California, San Diego, he worked in neuroscience research before returning to IIT Kanpur in 2014. His current research examines how nervous systems process information and turn sensory signals into behaviour, including studies involving insect brains. His work also connects neuroscience with digital mental-health tools. The journey illustrates how students can move across disciplines as their interests develop. Computer science, biology, neuroscience and artificial intelligence increasingly overlap in research and healthcare. Gupta’s career therefore offers students an example of how an engineering degree can become a foundation for interdisciplinary scientific research.
