Karnataka AI Third Language Debate: Teachers Seek Separate AI Subject

Karnataka AI Third Language plans have triggered a debate among teachers over the introduction of Artificial Intelligence as an alternative to the third language in government high schools. Deshiya Bhasha Hitarakshana Vedike has protested against the plan, while teachers have welcomed AI education but argued that it should be offered as a separate or elective subject. The Karnataka School Education Department announced AI as a vocational subject for Classes 9 and 10 in 1,642 government schools from the 2026–27 academic year under the National Skills Qualifications Framework. Teachers have also raised concerns about language-teacher recruitment, particularly for subjects other than Kannada and English. The forum has sought recruitment for all recognised languages and separate posts based on student enrolment. Teachers said Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu and Telugu could be affected, potentially limiting students’ access to these languages and reducing their learning opportunities.
