India Defence Startups Face Major Talent Gap by 2030

India Defence Startups facing a shortage of skilled engineering talent

India Defence Startups are witnessing rapid growth as the country expands domestic defence production, innovation and technology development. However, the sector is facing a growing shortage of specialised talent. A recent report indicates that 40–45% of specialised engineering roles could remain unfilled by 2030 without targeted skilling. The defence-tech market is projected to grow significantly, creating demand for professionals in areas such as aerospace engineering, artificial intelligence, robotics, drones, cybersecurity, electronics and advanced manufacturing. India’s defence production reached ₹1.78 lakh crore in 2025–26, while defence exports stood at ₹38,424 crore, highlighting the sector’s expanding ecosystem. The talent shortage underlines the need for stronger industry-academia partnerships, specialised training and practical technology programmes. Building a skilled workforce will be important for sustaining India’s growing defence startup ecosystem.
