IIT Madras Prosthetic Knee: Kadam Set for Wider Use

IIT Madras Prosthetic Knee Kadam assistive technology

IIT Madras Prosthetic Knee technology is moving towards wider use following a new partnership between IIT Madras and Spark Minda Foundation (SMF). The two organisations have signed a non-exclusive technology licensing agreement to scale ‘Kadam’, an indigenous prosthetic knee developed by IIT Madras researchers. Kadam was developed under the leadership of Professor Sujatha Srinivasan at IIT Madras’s National Centre for Assistive Health Technologies and TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development. The prosthetic knee is designed to support mobility, including on uneven terrain. The partnership combines IIT Madras’s research and engineering expertise with SMF’s product development, manufacturing and outreach capabilities. The aim is to make the technology accessible to a larger number of people with limb loss. The collaboration is also part of SMF’s broader initiative to develop indigenous prosthetic solutions and achieve 50,000 prosthetic limb fitments by 2030. The development highlights how academic research and industry partnerships can help move assistive technologies from laboratories towards wider real-world use.
