UGC Allied Healthcare Degree Rules: New MPT, MOT Specialisations

UGC allied healthcare degree rules introduce new MPT and MOT specialisations

UGC allied healthcare degree rules have been revised for the 2026-27 academic year, bringing changes to several undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare programmes. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has notified the fifth amendment to its 2014 degree specification rules, following approval from the Central Government. Under the revised framework, Master of Physiotherapy (M.PT) and Master of Occupational Therapy (M.OT) will no longer be awarded as general degrees to students admitted from 2026-27. Instead, degrees will carry specific specialisations. M.PT options include neurosciences, sports sciences, oncology and community rehabilitation, while M.OT includes mental health, rehabilitation, geriatrics, hand and oncological sciences. The notification also adds several allied healthcare degrees covering medical laboratory science, emergency medical technology, anaesthesia and operation theatre technology, psychology, medical social work and health information management. Students admitted before 2026-27 can continue under the earlier rules.
