NEP 2020 Northeast: States Seek Hill-Specific Education Rules

NEP 2020 Northeast conclave discusses hill-specific education norms

NEP 2020 Northeast implementation took centre stage at the Northeast Education Conclave 2026 in Nagaland, where education ministers, policymakers and academics discussed region-specific challenges. The two-day conclave focused on adapting the National Education Policy to the geographical, cultural and educational needs of the eight northeastern states. Mizoram Education Minister Vanlalthlana called for separate norms for hilly areas, including a terrain-based index and construction standards suited to difficult geography. He also suggested that Northeast education ministers meet regularly under the North Eastern Council and submit joint proposals. The discussions also highlighted multilingual education, indigenous knowledge, technology, skills, research and employability. Officials stressed that education should reflect local cultures while preparing students for emerging opportunities. The conclave is expected to support a collaborative framework for sharing resources, best practices and capacity-building initiatives across the region.
