Karnataka AI Education will expand to 1,642 government schools, with Artificial Intelligence introduced as a vocational subject for Classes 9 and 10 from the 2026–27 academic year. The programme comes under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) and will allow students to choose AI as a skill subject instead of a third-language option in participating schools. The rollout covers 1,180 newly approved high schools, 381 existing NSQF schools and 81 single-sector schools. In the latter group, AI will replace vocational subjects such as retail, apparel, and beauty and wellness. Schools will appoint AI guest teachers to deliver the programme. The initiative aims to develop problem-solving, critical thinking, technical knowledge and employability skills among students. The move has also prompted discussion among language teachers, particularly over the third-language option and teacher deployment.
