US Universities See Drop in International Student Applications

US universities international student applications decline amid visa uncertainty

US universities see international student applications have declined for the 2026 academic year, according to a survey by the American Council on Education (ACE). More than half of US colleges and universities reported lower applications from international students. Visa processing delays, visa denials, geopolitical tensions and uncertainty around immigration policies were identified as major concerns. The survey found that universities are facing challenges in attracting students from major international markets, including India and China. Institutions are also concerned about the financial impact of weaker international enrolment, as overseas students contribute significantly to campus diversity and university revenue. For Indian students, the developments could add uncertainty to US study-abroad plans. Visa timelines, education costs and post-study opportunities may become increasingly important while choosing a destination. Some students are also considering countries such as Canada, Australia, Germany and other European destinations.
