Tulu Official Language Status: Karnataka Cabinet Approves Move

Tulu Official Language status approved for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi

Tulu official language status has been approved by the Karnataka Cabinet for administrative use in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The decision was announced after the Cabinet meeting held in Mangaluru on September 18, 2026. The move gives Tulu the status of Karnataka’s second additional administrative language, with implementation limited to the two coastal districts. District administrations will undertake language-related work, including translation and staff training. The government has announced an annual allocation of Rs 82 lakh for activities connected with Tulu’s administrative use. The Cabinet meeting cleared development proposals, including a new tourism policy covering coastal and Malnad Karnataka. The recognition follows a long-standing demand from Tulu-speaking communities and organisations seeking greater recognition for the language in coastal Karnataka.
