IIT Madras Ocean Engineering students win Njord Challenge 2026

IIT Madras Ocean Engineering students have won the 2026 Njord Challenge in Norway, showcasing their work in autonomous marine technology. Team Aritra, representing the Department of Ocean Engineering, secured the overall championship with 90.42 points among 23 international teams. The competition tested autonomous surface vessels through tasks including docking, collision avoidance, manoeuvring, pathfinding and a surprise autonomy challenge. The team’s performance demonstrated the application of ocean engineering, navigation, robotics and autonomous systems in real-world maritime conditions. IIT Madras has a strong research focus on marine autonomous systems, including autonomous surface and underwater vessels. The achievement highlights how Ocean Engineering is increasingly connected with artificial intelligence, robotics and navigation technologies. Such expertise can support future applications in coastal surveillance, port monitoring, environmental data collection and marine operations. The result also reflects growing international opportunities for students working in ocean technologies.
