CBSE 3-Language Policy: Supreme Court Reviews Class 9 Concerns

CBSE 3-language policy for Class 9 under Supreme Court consideration

CBSE 3-language policy for Class 9 remains under Supreme Court review as the court examines concerns about implementation, academic workload and school preparedness. The policy requires Class 9 students to study three languages, with at least two being Indian languages, from July 2026. The Supreme Court has been hearing petitions concerning the implementation of the revised framework. During recent proceedings, Chief Justice Surya Kant described Class 9 as a mature stage while a plea seeking relief for students was listed for consideration. The court has also raised concerns about practical issues, including availability of teachers, textbooks and infrastructure for different language options. CBSE has been asked to work on implementation arrangements following earlier observations that students should not face undue pressure. The board’s current 2026-27 scheme also lists a third language as optional up to 2028-29. The matter remains subject to further proceedings and CBSE’s implementation decisions.
