India semiconductor manufacturing is entering a new phase as the country expands chip production, investment and talent development. At SEMICON India 2026, the government highlighted efforts to build a complete semiconductor ecosystem covering chip design, manufacturing, equipment, materials, advanced packaging, research and skills. The government has reported around ₹1 lakh crore in investment commitments under Semicon 2.0, with close to one lakh employment opportunities expected across the ecosystem. A target has also been set to train one lakh technicians over five years. Five semiconductor units have commenced commercial production, according to the government. The programme also involves universities and academic institutions in chip-design education and workforce development. These developments are aimed at expanding India’s role across the global semiconductor supply chain while creating opportunities for technology, engineering, research and manufacturing careers.
