IIT Madras Climate Resilience Framework for India’s Coast

IIT Madras Climate Resilience Framework has been developed to assess climate change risks along India’s coastal regions and identify practical adaptation measures. The framework was created by IIT Madras’ Centre of Excellence on Climate Change Impacts on Coastal Infrastructure and Adaptation Strategies, supported by the Department of Science and Technology. The research focuses on risks including cyclones, storm surges, coastal flooding, shoreline erosion, sea-level rise and extreme rainfall. Researchers have developed climate, cyclone, storm-surge, wave, hydrodynamic and morphodynamic models specifically for the Indian coast. The team has also prepared Coastal Vulnerability Index maps for Chennai, Ennore and Karaikal and conducted flood inundation modelling for Chennai. Other initiatives include monitoring climate-related damage to port infrastructure, improving reservoir management and addressing saltwater intrusion. The Centre has additionally developed climate-resilient wastewater treatment solutions and introduced the BASIEC framework to support community-based adaptation to coastal hazards.
