AI in Legal Education: How Technology Is Changing Law Studies

AI transforming legal education from case memorisation to legal reasoning

AI in Legal Education is changing the way law students learn, research and apply legal principles. Instead of relying primarily on memorising cases and legal provisions, emerging approaches are placing greater emphasis on legal reasoning, critical thinking and practical application. AI tools can help students search legal materials, summarise lengthy judgments, understand complex concepts and practise problem-solving. These applications can make learning more interactive while allowing students to receive faster feedback on their work. However, the growing use of AI also raises concerns about accuracy, academic integrity, confidentiality and overdependence on technology. A 2026 survey on AI and India’s legal ecosystem found that many respondents were concerned about the impact of uncontrolled AI use on critical thinking and research skills. Law schools are therefore increasingly exploring ways to teach students how to use AI responsibly while independently verifying information and developing sound legal arguments. This could make AI literacy an increasingly important part of modern legal education.
