Karnataka Government School Students Await Notebooks, Footwear

Karnataka government school students waiting for notebooks and footwear

Karnataka government school students in several districts are facing delays in receiving essential learning materials, including notebooks, shoes and socks. Months into the academic year, some children are depending on teachers, local donors, alumni and community groups for basic school supplies. Educationists and student organisations have raised concerns that the shortage could affect classroom learning, particularly for children from economically weaker families. In Ballari, one government school with 158 students reportedly had children waiting for notebooks, while some students were unable to afford additional supplies at home. Footwear distribution has also faced delays, with reports of students waiting for shoes and socks for several months. Some children have reportedly attended school barefoot because their families could not afford to purchase footwear. Education experts have urged the Karnataka Education Department to complete procurement earlier and establish clear timelines so that essential materials reach schools before the academic year begins. The issue has renewed concerns about timely delivery of basic student welfare measures across Karnataka.
