Engineers’ Day: Sir M. Visvesvaraya and the Spirit of Engineering

Sir M. Visvesvaraya and the spirit of engineering celebrated on Engineers’ Day

Engineers’ Day is not only a day to remember Sir M. Visvesvaraya, but also an opportunity to understand the spirit of engineering in everyday life. September 15 is a day of great significance for every Indian, particularly for the engineering community. The day is celebrated as Engineers’ Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of the Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, one of India’s greatest engineers and nation-builders. It is an occasion to remember and pay our heartfelt tribute to a visionary whose intelligence, discipline, simplicity and dedication continue to inspire generations.

Sir M. Visvesvaraya proved his brilliance in many ways throughout his remarkable life. Even today, the common man remembers stories of his determination and commitment to education, including the widely recalled account of his studying under street lights. His simplicity and his remarkable contribution to Karnataka, including the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam, have made his name unforgettable. He will always be remembered with pride as “The Engineer of India.”

But if we look beyond professional qualifications, the word engineering has a much broader meaning. Our country is home to countless people who perform engineering-like work every day without formally being certified engineers.Consider a plumber who responds during an emergency, often working alone to restore essential water connections. Think of an electrical lineman who works under difficult conditions to prevent accidents and restore power, sometimes putting his own life at risk. A mason who can identify and repair structural or leakage-related problems using experience and practical knowledge, often finding economical solutions. Their work involves observation, calculation, problem-solving and timely action.

A carpenter who may not have had formal schooling can create beautiful and precise furniture through years of experience. A driver constantly estimates speed, distance, traffic conditions and fuel requirements to reach a destination safely and efficiently. A skilled mechanic can diagnose a vehicle’s problem almost instinctively and repair it within minutes. A tailor takes measurements, understands proportions and creates different designs for clothing, cushions for furniture. These individuals may not carry an engineering degree, but their work demonstrates practical intelligence, calculation, creativity and problem-solving ability. In this broader sense, every individual performs some form of engineering in everyday life. We constantly assess situations, make decisions, find solutions, adjust our plans and use available resources to achieve desired results.

Most importantly, we need to apply this idea of engineering to our own lives. Our thoughts, actions, habits, lifestyle and food choices need thoughtful planning and proper management if we wish to maintain a healthy body and a peaceful mind. Just as an engineer designs a system to function efficiently, we too need to design our lives with discipline, balance, foresight and responsibility.

On this Engineers’ Day, let us not merely celebrate engineers or remember a great personality. Let us learn from Sir M. Visvesvaraya’s life that brings the spirit of engineering into our personal and professional lives—to observe carefully, think logically, solve problems creatively, use resources wisely and act responsibly within our own limits. That would be one of the finest tributes we can offer to Sir M. Visvesvaraya: not merely to admire the engineer he was, but to embrace the engineering spirit in the way we live.

The true spirit of engineering goes beyond degrees and professional titles. Sir M. Visvesvaraya’s life teaches us to think logically, solve problems creatively, use resources wisely and live with discipline and responsibility. Engineers’ Day is therefore a reminder that we can all bring an engineering mindset into our daily lives.
