IIT Roorkee Smart Bandage using body movement for wound healing

IIT Roorkee Smart Bandage is a wound-care technology developed with the Institute of Nano Science and Technology, Mohali. Called 3D-MIDAS, the dressing uses body movement to generate electrical signals without batteries, wires or an external power source. The material converts mechanical energy created when it stretches into electrical stimulation at the wound site. Its breathable structure can help to manage wound fluid and adapt for movement. Laboratory tests showed three times higher cell proliferation and 2.5 times greater cell migration than control conditions. In animal studies, treated wounds showed 90–95% closure within 13–15 days, along with improved blood-vessel formation, tissue structure and collagen deposition. The technology maintained stable performance through 500 stretching cycles and showed stability over three months. However, it remains at the preclinical stage and requires human clinical trials before use. The research demonstrates how materials can support healthcare.
