IIT Madras PREM Initiative is bringing parents into the institute’s student support system to help them better understand, communicate with and support their children. The initiative, launched ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day, focuses on students’ emotional well-being during their academic journey. PREM stands for Parents’ Role in Encouraging and Mentoring. IIT Madras organised an interactive online session for parents on September 9, led by psychiatrist Dr Yamini Kannapan. The session offered practical guidance on recognising students’ needs and providing supportive communication. The institute also launched the SAFE handbook, which explains four principles: Secure Base, Autonomy Support, Failure-Friendly Mindset and Early Recognition. It aims to help parents respond to the pressures faced by high-achieving students. Alongside these initiatives, IIT Madras launched the MiTR wellness website and a wellness app for confidential counselling appointments. The efforts highlight the growing role of parents and institutions in creating a supportive campus environment for students.
