IIT Madras Precision Agriculture research is exploring ways to grow water-intensive crops such as rice and sugarcane while using significantly less water. IIT Madras Director Professor V. Kamakoti said the institute is working on technology that could help farmers use water more efficiently. The initiative is linked to IITM Pravartak, the institute’s technology innovation hub focused on sensors, networking, actuators and control systems. These technologies can support precision farming by monitoring soil moisture, crop conditions and irrigation needs. Rice cultivation can require large amounts of water, while sugarcane also needs substantial irrigation. Precision agriculture aims to provide crops with water when and where it is needed instead of relying on excessive flooding. Sensors, data, satellite imagery and smarter irrigation methods can help to reduce wastage. The initiative highlights how engineering and agricultural technology can work together to address water scarcity and support more sustainable farming practices in India.
