BITS Pilani Advanced Materials Centre will focus on advanced materials research after BITS Pilani received a $1 million seed gift from alumnus and entrepreneur Anurag Jain. The new AMRIT Centre will be established at the institute’s Goa campus to connect scientific research with industry and commercial applications. Its research will initially cover two-dimensional and functional materials, with applications in batteries, hydrogen production, fuel cells, solar energy, carbon capture, semiconductors and sensors. The centre will also support technology development, industry partnerships, intellectual property and materials-focused startups. BITS Pilani said the initiative will require multi-million-dollar investment as its activities expand. The centre aims to train researchers, engineers and specialists while strengthening India’s capabilities in strategically important technologies. Anurag Jain, a 1988 BITS Pilani graduate, said the initiative could help India build global leadership in advanced materials and translate laboratory discoveries into practical technologies.
