Karnataka student union elections are set to return to colleges after a 37-year ban, with the state Cabinet approving a new framework for campus elections. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara announces the return of student union elections after a 37-year ban. The decision covers degree and pre-university colleges in the first phase. Elections will not be conducted under the banners of political parties, although students affiliated with political organisations can contest independently. Each student union will have a president, two vice-presidents, a general secretary, two joint secretaries and a six-member executive committee. Some positions will be reserved for women, including one vice-president, one joint secretary and two executive members. Caste-based reservation will not be provided. Colleges will conduct elections if students favour them, while polls can be cancelled if students oppose holding them. The ban was introduced in 1989 following campus violence.
