IIT Kanpur Family Score uses artificial intelligence and existing government data to help to identify households that may need welfare support. Developed by IIT Kanpur in collaboration with the Andhra Pradesh government, the system assesses the socio-economic conditions of families without requiring fresh household surveys. The AI models were trained using around 15 government-owned datasets and calibrated against scores generated through a statewide survey. IIT Kanpur says the system could provide a faster and more cost-effective way to identify potential beneficiaries of government schemes. The first phase findings were presented to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and senior officials. The next phase is expected to expand the system across Andhra Pradesh and include large-scale validation. IIT Kanpur says each score can include an explanation, allowing officials to understand the assessment while retaining control over final decisions.
