Karnataka 15% rural reservation could provide more opportunities for students from rural areas seeking admission to professional education courses. The Karnataka Higher Education Department has proposed a 15% horizontal reservation within government seats in professional educational institutions. Under the draft rules, 7.5% of the quota would benefit students who studied from Classes 1 to 10 in government schools or government pre-university colleges located in rural areas. Another 7.5% would be available to students who completed Classes 1 to 10 in any institution located in a rural area, including private schools. The proposal aims to reduce the rural-urban gap in access to professional education. However, the rules have not yet taken effect. The government has invited objections and suggestions from stakeholders, with the draft expected to take effect only after formal notification in the Official Gazette.
