AI and Children: What Parents Need to Know About AI

AI and Children using artificial intelligence for learning

AI and Children are increasingly connected as artificial intelligence becomes part of education and everyday life. Parents and teachers face a new challenge: helping children benefit from AI without allowing it to replace essential skills such as reading, writing, numeracy and independent thinking.AI can support personalised learning, create age-appropriate educational content and help children explore difficult concepts. However, AI systems can also make mistakes or produce convincing but incorrect information. Children therefore need to learn how to question, verify and critically evaluate AI-generated answers.Education should not simply ban AI. Instead, students can be taught when to use AI and when to work independently. One approach suggested by Daniel Susskind is to “teach both, test both” — developing AI skills while continuing to assess traditional abilities without technology. For parents, the focus should be on responsible use, strong foundational skills and encouraging curiosity rather than fear of technology.
