AI Skills for Students are becoming important across careers, but students do not necessarily need to become AI engineers to remain employable. Universities and employers are increasingly placing value on a combination of AI awareness and subject knowledge. A student studying law, healthcare, management, media or education can benefit from understanding how AI affects that particular field. Students should therefore build three layers of skills: strong subject fundamentals, practical digital and AI abilities, and human skills such as communication, critical thinking and problem-solving. Projects can make these skills easier to demonstrate. For example, students can use AI responsibly to analyse information, create prototypes, organise research or solve practical problems while checking the accuracy of the output themselves. Building a portfolio of such work can provide stronger evidence of ability than simply completing online AI courses.
