AI Counselling for Students: Are Schools Ready for the Future?

AI counselling for students and the changing role of school counsellors

AI Counselling for Students is becoming an emerging reality as young people increasingly turn to artificial intelligence for advice, emotional support and answers to personal concerns. AI tools are now easily accessible, allowing students to discuss academic pressure, relationships, anxiety and other personal issues at any time. This convenience raises an important question: can technology become a student’s first source of counselling? While AI can provide quick responses and help students organise their thoughts, it cannot fully replace trained counsellors, teachers or trusted adults. Human professionals can understand emotions, family situations and warning signs that an AI system may miss. Schools therefore need to prepare students to use AI responsibly while strengthening access to qualified counsellors. Students should also learn when a problem requires human help rather than an automated response. As AI becomes part of everyday life, education must balance technological literacy with empathy, human connection and emotional support.
