AI and Student Learning are showing mixed results, with new research suggesting that generative AI can make homework faster while potentially weakening students’ independent learning and exam performance. A study tracking around 27,000 students aged 12 to 18 in China for 30 months found a significant gap between completing schoolwork and actually learning. After students began using generative AI, their homework scores increased by 18%, while average time spent on assignments dropped from 64 to 45 minutes. However, their monthly closed-book exam scores declined by 20% within six months. Their performance in high-stakes entrance exams also fell, with the effects becoming clearer over time. The findings suggest that using AI to complete tasks may improve short-term results without creating lasting knowledge. The OECD has similarly warned that unstructured AI use can improve performance without meaningful learning gains.
