EOS-05 Earth Observation Satellite: ISRO Launches New Space Eye

EOS-05 Earth Observation Satellite launched by ISRO

EOS-05 Earth Observation Satellite is India’s first imaging satellite designed to operate from a geosynchronous orbit. ISRO successfully launched the satellite aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on September 4, 2026. The satellite was placed into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit after the launch. EOS-05 is expected to provide continuous observation of India and surrounding areas from an altitude of around 36,000 km. Unlike satellites in lower orbits that capture images only when they pass over a particular region, its geosynchronous position can support more frequent and continuous monitoring. The satellite can support applications such as weather monitoring, disaster management, agriculture, mapping and strategic observation. The mission also represents an important milestone for ISRO’s Earth-observation programme.
