Delhi University Carbon Garden: India’s First Green Campus Initiative

Delhi University Carbon Garden with plants and biodiversity to combat pollution

Delhi University Carbon Garden has been inaugurated at the Department of Botany as an initiative to tackle air and soil pollution while supporting urban biodiversity. The university describes it as India’s first Carbon Garden. Spread across around 2,000 square feet, the garden contains nearly 50 plant species, including herbs, shrubs and trees. It also incorporates microorganisms such as algae, fungi and bacteria, creating a mini biodiversity park. Plants and microorganisms can help absorb carbon dioxide and certain pollutants while supporting soil quality. Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh highlighted the need for climate-sensitive urban planning and encouraged other university departments and colleges to develop similar spaces. The project aims to demonstrate how small green areas can contribute to sustainability and environmental protection in crowded cities.
