The Indian contingent secured four gold, three silver and two bronze medals, making it the country’s best-ever performance at the International Earth Science Olympiad. The competition was held from August 20 to 27, 2026. The students competed in several areas of Earth science and demonstrated their knowledge through written tests, practical activities, field investigations and project events. The Indian team was selected after a national-level training and selection process involving around 17,000 participants. The final four students represented India at the international competition. The achievement highlights the growing interest among Indian students in Earth sciences, including areas such as geology, environmental science, meteorology and related fields. India’s nine-medal haul at IESO 2026 is particularly significant because it represents a new national benchmark in the competition. The performance also highlights the potential of school students in advanced scientific disciplines when given the right training and opportunities.
