IIT Madras BS Data Science Admission: A Remarkable Story of Determination

J Santhosh secures IIT Madras BS Data Science Admission despite 90% disability

IIT Madras BS Data Science Admission has become a significant achievement for 17-year-old J Santhosh, who has overcome major physical challenges to pursue higher education at one of India’s leading institutions. Santhosh, who has a 90% spinal muscular disability and cerebral palsy since birth, secured admission to the four-year BS Degree in Data Science and Applications at IIT Madras. He cleared the programme’s qualifier examination on his second attempt. His journey began after his classmates returned from a school visit to IIT Madras and shared their experiences. Although Santhosh could not join them at the time, their stories inspired him to dream of studying at the institute. Initially, he planned to prepare for JEE, but his health challenges made that difficult. He continued focusing on academics and eventually became his school’s Class 12 topper. His headmaster later introduced him to the IIT Madras BS programme. Santhosh also learned about the IITM For All initiative, which helped him explore an accessible route to higher education. During the application process, he received support from Tamil Nadu Volunteers and IIT Madras outreach officials. The team helped to resolve his application difficulties and supported his qualifier preparation. The flexible nature of the Data Science programme is particularly important for Santhosh because it allows him to pursue much of his education from home. Through IITM For All, he will also receive initial in-person support and AI training, while Tamil Nadu Volunteers will cover his first-year tuition expenses. Santhosh hopes to build a career in IT, preferably through a work-from-home opportunity. He also plans to pursue a master’s degree and hopes to clear GATE in the future.
