Student Right to Question must be protected in universities, Supreme Court Justice Ujjal Bhuyan said while addressing the 13th convocation of National Law University, Delhi. He said students expressing different viewpoints or asking questions cannot be threatened with punitive action, calling such action unconstitutional and a misuse of power. Justice Bhuyan said universities should encourage free thinking, debate and the examination of established ideas. According to him, disagreement should be addressed through reason rather than hostility. He also highlighted dissent and tolerance as important constitutional values, noting that a democratic society requires space for different opinions and beliefs. Universities, he said, should be the places where students can ask difficult questions without fear. The remarks also underline the importance of academic freedom and constitutional values in higher education. Justice Bhuyan stressed that liberty, equality, dignity and justice should remain central to legal education and public life.
