IITs IISc Medical Education: How India’s Top Institutes Are Entering Medicine

IITs and IISc expanding into medical education and healthcare research

IITs IISc medical education is changing the traditional boundaries between engineering, science and medicine in India. Leading institutes are increasingly exploring medical degrees, clinical research, hospitals and interdisciplinary healthcare programmes. IIT Kharagpur has moved towards postgraduate medical education, while IIT Madras has developed its School of Medical Sciences with ambitions spanning medicine and research. IIT Kanpur is also expanding its medical ecosystem through its medical school and super-specialty hospital. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is following a research-driven approach through its medical school and planned hospital, with an integrated MD-PhD programme expected to strengthen the connection between clinical medicine and scientific research. The shift reflects the growing role of AI, medical robotics, biomedical engineering, diagnostics and advanced technologies in healthcare. By bringing engineers, scientists and doctors together, these institutes could create new opportunities for medical devices, precision healthcare and healthcare innovation. However, regulatory requirements, faculty recruitment, hospital infrastructure and operational costs remain major challenges as IITs and IISc expand into medical education.
