IIT Madras Phiball: New 3-Team Sport Combines Speed and Strategy

Students playing Phiball, the new three-team sport launched by IIT Madras

IIT Madras Phiball is a new three-team invasion sport introduced by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras ahead of National Sports Day. Launched on August 28, the game offers a fresh take on traditional team sports by having three teams compete simultaneously on a 26-metre circular court. Each team has seven players, with four playing at a time and three substitutes. Teams attack two baskets while defending one, and the basket they defend changes after every quarter. A match consists of three eight-minute quarters, making the game fast and demanding. Players must constantly watch multiple opponents, communicate and change their strategy quickly. Phiball also uses a 24-second shot clock and a three-level scoring system. For students, the sport highlights the importance of teamwork, fitness, communication, presence of mind and tactical decision-making.
