Plastic Bottle Artificial Island: British Artist Builds Floating Home

Richart Sowa’s artificial island built from recycled plastic bottles

Plastic bottle artificial island Joyxee Island was an extraordinary example of recycling, creativity and sustainable design. British artist Richart Sowa spent years collecting more than 100,000 discarded plastic bottles and used them to create a floating island near Isla Mujeres, Mexico. The bottles were packed into nets to form the island’s foundation, which supported a three-storey home. Sowa added several sustainable features, including solar-powered electricity, two swimming ponds, a waterfall and a wave-powered washing machine. The island also had internet connectivity and became an unusual example of how waste materials could be transformed into a functional living space. Sowa had previously created another bottle-based island, but it was destroyed by a hurricane. Joyxee Island later attracted international attention for its innovative approach to recycling and sustainable living. However, the floating island eventually disappeared after storm damage and official intervention.
