Educated Unemployment in India: Why Graduates Struggle for Jobs

Educated unemployment in India as graduates struggle to find suitable jobs

Educated unemployment in India is emerging as a major concern as the number of graduates grows faster than suitable job opportunities. According to the latest PLFS data cited in a recent report, unemployment among people with secondary education and above was 6.5%, compared with the national rate of 3.1%. Experts point to the skills mismatch and a shortage of productive, well-paying jobs for graduates. Entry-level positions are increasingly demanding prior experience, while many students have limited access to internships and industry exposure. The problem is also visible among highly qualified professionals, including PhD holders, who may struggle to find specialised roles in India. Experts argue that education and industry need closer collaboration, with greater emphasis on practical skills, apprenticeships and workplace experience. At the same time, India needs stronger job creation across sectors to absorb its expanding educated workforce.
