Free Coaching Scheme for SC OBC Students Sees Poor Enrolment

Free Coaching Scheme for SC OBC Students sees low enrolment against government target

Free Coaching Scheme for SC, OBC Students has recorded significantly lower enrolment than the government’s target, raising concerns over the reach of the programme. According to a Parliamentary Standing Committee report, only 2,790 candidates enrolled for free coaching against a target of 10,500, achieving just 26% of the intended number. The scheme provides free coaching to economically disadvantaged students preparing for competitive examinations, including UPSC, SSC, Railway Recruitment Board tests, JEE, NEET, CAT and other entrance and eligibility examinations. The report also highlighted low utilisation of funds allocated for the scheme. For 2025-26, the budget estimate was ₹20 crore, while actual expenditure stood at ₹7.71 crore. The committee noted that the government has set a target of 7,000 beneficiaries for 2026-27, but recommended reviewing the target and improving outreach to ensure more eligible students benefit from the programme.
