Harvard International Students: Return to US Before Sep 15

Harvard international students affected by new US visa rules

Harvard international students have been advised to return to the United States before September 15, 2026, as new federal rules governing F-1 and J-1 visa holders take effect. Harvard’s International Office said the new Duration of Status rule will replace the existing system under which students generally remain in the US for the duration of their authorised programme. The university has advised students currently outside the US to plan their return carefully before the rule takes effect. The change does not immediately affect students’ ability to begin their Fall 2026 programmes. However, Harvard has warned that international travel after September 15 could affect the Admit Until Date recorded on a student’s Form I-94. The development is particularly important for international students planning long-term study, research or employment in the US, as future immigration and status-extension procedures could be affected.
