BA, BSc, BCom Job-Linked Degrees: NITI Aayog Calls for Major Reforms

BA BSc BCom job-linked degrees proposed under NITI Aayog higher education reforms

BA, BSc, BCom job-linked degrees could become a key focus of higher education reforms as NITI Aayog flags weak connections between generic undergraduate programmes and employment opportunities. Its report, Reimagining Skilling for Viksit Bharat 2047, says curricula often remain outdated and are not sufficiently aligned with industry requirements. Only 8.25% of graduates are employed in roles matching their qualifications, according to data cited in the report. More than 2 crore students are enrolled in BA, BSc and BCom programmes, highlighting the scale of the challenge. NITI Aayog has recommended specialised programmes such as BA Hospitality, BCom Analytics and BSc Applied Technology. It also calls for greater adoption of apprenticeships, work-integrated degrees, hybrid learning and earn-while-you-learn models. Stronger industry participation and public-private partnerships are proposed to make higher education more closely connected to employment outcomes.
