Aadhaar Engineering Feat: How India Built a Billion-Scale ID System

Aadhaar engineering feat and billion-scale biometric identity technology

Aadhaar engineering feat represents one of India’s most ambitious technology projects, requiring solutions to problems that had never been addressed at such a scale. When Nandan Nilekani’s team began work with UIDAI in 2009, the challenge was to create a unique identity for every resident while preventing duplicate identities. Unlike conventional databases, Aadhaar uses biometric information, including fingerprints and iris scans, to verify identities. Comparing every person’s biometric data against every other record would have been computationally impractical. The engineering team therefore developed scalable approaches using multiple algorithms to improve identification accuracy and processing efficiency. The project demonstrated how computer science, large-scale data processing and biometric technology could be combined to build digital infrastructure for a population of more than a billion people. Aadhaar subsequently became an important part of India’s digital public infrastructure and identity-verification ecosystem.
