AI in healthcare can help India improve access to medical expertise, reduce administrative delays and support earlier diagnosis and preventive care. AI in healthcare is emerging as a potential solution to some of India’s biggest challenges, including uneven access to specialists, rising patient volumes and the growing need for continuous care. AI can support hospitals by automating administrative work such as scheduling, documentation, claims and inventory management, allowing healthcare professionals to focus more on patients. It can also expand access through remote monitoring, virtual specialist support and AI-assisted diagnostics. India’s digital health infrastructure is creating a stronger foundation for these applications, with more than 100 crore health records linked to Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts by May 2026. Globally, more than 1,000 AI-enabled medical devices had received U.S. FDA authorisation by January 2025. However, effective implementation requires clinical validation, representative data and human oversight. The greatest potential may lie in using AI for earlier detection, preventive care and better access rather than simply automating existing processes.
