Karnataka Government First Grade Colleges: 428 of 440 Lack Principals

Karnataka government first-grade colleges facing shortage of principals

Karnataka government first grade colleges are facing a major leadership gap, with 428 of the state’s 440 government first-grade colleges reportedly functioning without principals. Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy shared the figures in the Karnataka Legislative Council while responding to a calling-attention motion seeking a new government first-grade college in Davanagere South. The minister said vacancies for principals are being filled in phases. However, the government is currently prioritising strengthening infrastructure in existing colleges rather than immediately opening new institutions. Karnataka has also announced plans to establish eight new government first-grade or residential degree colleges under the 2026–27 Budget. The development highlights the wider challenge of ensuring adequate leadership, infrastructure and staffing across government higher education institutions. For students, effective college administration is important for academic planning, campus facilities and the overall learning environment. The government’s phased recruitment and infrastructure measures will therefore be closely watched.
