IIT Madras Medical School is being planned as a major expansion into medical education, with the institute aiming to offer its own MBBS, MD and PhD programmes. IIT Madras Director Professor V. Kamakoti said the institute intends to establish a dedicated School of Medical Sciences and award medical degrees of its own. The proposed school would take IIT Madras beyond its traditional strength in engineering and technology and strengthen the connection between medicine and advanced technology. The institute has already entered the healthcare-technology field through its Department of Medical Sciences and Technology, established in 2023. The department currently offers a four-year undergraduate programme in Medical Sciences and Engineering, along with MS and PhD programmes. However, the proposed MBBS and MD programmes would require the necessary regulatory approvals before students can be admitted. The initiative could eventually create new opportunities at the intersection of medicine, engineering, AI and healthcare technology.
