Graduate job mismatch in India is emerging as a major concern as millions of students complete degrees without finding work aligned with their qualifications. A NITI Aayog paper, Reimagining Skilling for Viksit Bharat@2047, highlights a disconnect between higher education and industry requirements. Of around 3.4 crore undergraduate students, more than two crore are enrolled in BA, BSc and BCom programmes, which the paper says often have weak links with employment. Around 80% of learners reportedly identify a lack of practical experience and industry exposure as a major gap. The report calls for stronger industry participation, vocational education, apprenticeships and outcome-linked skilling programmes. It also proposes measures such as a Digital Skills Passport and wider implementation of the National Credit Framework. For students, the findings underline the importance of combining degrees with practical experience, digital skills and industry-relevant training.
