ChatGPT for teens is being introduced by OpenAI with stronger safeguards designed specifically for users under 18. The new experience aims to support learning, creativity and critical thinking while reducing exposure to content that may be inappropriate for teenagers. OpenAI says users identified as under 18, or those who state they are aged 13 to 17, are automatically placed into the teen experience. The protections cover areas including self-harm, violence, dangerous activities, eating disorders and explicit content. Parents with linked teen accounts can manage selected settings, including quiet hours, voice mode, image generation and Study Mode, and can receive limited safety notifications in high-risk situations. OpenAI is also adding break reminders and cues reinforcing that ChatGPT is an AI system. The move reflects growing attention to how teenagers use AI for education while balancing access, safety and healthy technology habits.
