Free Government Coaching: Can It Replace Expensive Private Coaching?

Free government coaching using digital technology for competitive exam preparation

Free Government Coaching could reshape competitive-exam preparation in India by using digital public infrastructure to provide quality learning resources without the high fees charged by private coaching centres. The government has announced plans to create free online coaching for competitive examinations, with the aim of helping students prepare from home and reducing the financial burden on families. The proposal comes amid growing concerns over the rising cost of private coaching for examinations such as NEET and other competitive tests. Platforms such as SWAYAM and SAATHI already demonstrate how technology can provide free learning content and practice resources. However, free lectures alone may not completely replace private coaching, which often offers structured study plans, regular assessments, doubt-solving and personalised guidance. The real challenge will be creating a public platform that combines high-quality content with testing, feedback and personalised learning. If designed well, technology could make competitive-exam preparation more accessible and affordable.
