Engineering Education in India: Why It Must Change for the AI Era

Engineering Education in India adapting to AI and emerging technologies

Engineering Education in India needs a major shift from traditional, theory-heavy learning towards practical skills, innovation, employability and emerging technologies such as AI, cybersecurity and semiconductor design. While India aims to become a global technology leader, many engineering colleges continue to face declining admissions, outdated curricula, weak industry links and concerns over graduate employability. The AICTE placed 58 engineering colleges under progressive closure during 2025–26 and discontinued more than 950 engineering and technical courses, highlighting the challenges facing the sector. The answer, however, is not simply to create more engineering seats. Colleges need to focus on competency-based learning, projects, internships, research, entrepreneurship and stronger industry partnerships. Students also need strong foundations in mathematics, science and core engineering alongside emerging technologies. The future of engineering education should therefore focus on producing capable, adaptable and globally competitive engineers rather than simply increasing graduate numbers.
