CBSE Three-Language Policy: Supreme Court Flags Student Stress and Academic Pressure

CBSE Three-Language Policy Supreme Court update on Class 9 language requirements

CBSE Three-Language Policy is facing fresh scrutiny from the Supreme Court, which has stressed that students should not face undue pressure while the new language framework is implemented. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, said the policy itself was not necessarily problematic but that practical difficulties in its implementation needed to be addressed. The court highlighted the need for adequate teachers and infrastructure for the language options offered to students. The policy requires Class 9 students, from July 1, 2026, to study three languages, with at least two being Indian languages. The court also asked the Centre to consider how the policy is being implemented across other school boards and whether the starting class should be reconsidered. The matter has been posted for further hearing after 10 days.
