Karnataka 7.5% reservation for rural government school students in medical and engineering courses

Karnataka 7.5% reservation for rural government school students has been announced for professional higher education, including medical and engineering courses. The measure aims to improve access to professional education for students studying in government schools in rural areas. Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced during his Independence Day address in Bengaluru. The government will implement the reservation along with the Vidyarthi Sahayahastha initiative for rural students. The proposed quota could create an additional pathway for eligible students seeking admission to professional courses through examinations and admission processes such as NEET and Karnataka CET. However, the government has not yet provided complete details about eligibility criteria, admission procedures or the date from which the reservation will take effect. Further guidelines are expected to clarify how the quota will be implemented. The move is part of Karnataka’s wider education initiatives aimed at improving opportunities for rural students and strengthening access to professional education.
