Generative AI in Legal Education: CJI Opposes Total Ban

Generative AI in legal education and CJI Surya Kant

Generative AI in legal education should be integrated responsibly rather than completely prohibited, according to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. Speaking at the Vice Chancellors’ Conclave 2.0 at National Law University, Jodhpur, the CJI urged law universities to take the lead in adapting legal education to technological change. He stressed that academic integrity and responsible AI use should become important parts of curriculum and teaching. Law students will increasingly work with AI tools capable of analysing precedents, identifying legal risks and supporting legal research. However, the CJI emphasised that technology should not replace essential human qualities such as judgment, fairness and justice. Law schools therefore need to prepare students to use AI transparently and responsibly while strengthening independent legal reasoning and professional ethics.
